A Room for Rudy

An update on the benefit we are hosting on December 15. We have been fortunate enough to have the event at Dee’s Restaurant from 6 until 8:30. Silent Auction viewing starts at 6 and dinner to follow at 6:30. If anyone would like to donate, we will be collecting different items and gift certificates. We are also making gift baskets including: automotive, nature/hunting/fishing, bath n body, food, fun in the sun, tech, and possibly health & beauty. The tickets will be $15 per person. 100% of the donations/ticket sales/silent auction goes to the construction of the bathroom/closet for Rudy. The following is this amazing family’s testimony of faith in such a time of trial.

The Lopez family is a family of six that has endured more than many of us can image. Yet through all of their tribulations, their faith in God has become stronger and their love for each other is infallible. It started 14 years ago with Rudy’s youngest sister. At the age of 13, she became ill. Doctors found cirrhosis of the liver and she underwent a liver transplant. Two years later, life for them drastically changed. The eldest son, Rudy Lopez, began to sleep a lot and would get fevers often. School first noticed the problem and sent him to see a doctor. His blood oxygen levels were low and he had an enlarged spleen. They took it out hoping he would recover. He did not. Then they found gallstones in his bladder which is rare in a child of 12. They removed his gall bladder. For the next four years, Rudy was in and out of hospitals, more often in than out. The doctors were not looking for solutions at this time; they were just trying to keep him alive. They wrongly diagnosed him with disorders of respiratory system, chronic liver disease, avm and others illnesses. Four years ago, they found Arteriovenous malformations or AVMs in his joints including his knees. This causes the arteries and veins to be tangled and blood to flow fast and under pressure. Also he does not get the nutrients and oxygen his body needs. Finally they found out he had HTT which stands for Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiesctasia. This is a lifelong disease and there is no cure-it is terminal. Last year Rudy had an AVM burst in his stomach causing him to bleed out into his system. HE was rushed to the hospital and underwent surgery for the AVMS in his lungs, abdomen and knees. His oxygen was in the 40-50’s and he was confined to a wheelchair. HE spent two months recovering in the hospital.

The surgeries for HTT correct the avm’s for a short time but patching them makes new ones grow. It is like fixing a leaking worn pipe, eventually the pipe will burst in a new spot after it is plugged because of the pressure. The surgery plug up the veins that are not supposed to be connected to the artery. At any time, he could bleed out, meaning if one of the veins pop in his knee or anywhere else, he can bleed to death in seconds. In order to live, he will require these surgeries when the avms form. He lives with the thought that he could die at any moment from one bursting. He is scheduled for another avm surgery at the end of December. His last surgery caused him to stay in the hospital for two months. Since the beginning, the family all travels for support camping out in the car or in the lobby for days or weeks at a time. Rudy’s and the fmaily’s spirit is impressive. Rudy views this as a win win situation. If he lives, he lives for his Lord and Savior as a testimony of faith. He states “if I die, I still win because I get to go home to my Father”.

The story does not end there: Around the time of Rudy’s first difficulties, the Lopez’s oldest daughter had a stroke at the age of 23. The doctors found that an avm in her brain, a hole in her heart and a tumor in her head. They performed brain surgery to embolize the avms. THey could not remove the tumor since it was deep in her brain and will cause blindness when removed. The tumor is fatal and will eventually kill her so she will have to choose between death or blindness for the tumor. In May of this year, the she was pregnant and expected to deliver at full term. Ten days before her due date, she noticed something was not right. Doctors dismissed her and the next day her baby boy was born still born.

Just this year, the youngest son who is 16 was diagnosed with an avm in his nose. Doctors are monitoring it and he remains very active and health. This family has had their share of grief and tribulations and yet they are still faithful and dedicated to their Savior. Their attitudes are positive and determined. They are a family that supports each other, leaning on each other throughout the good and the bad.

Now why are we involved …well a few years ago, they hired a contractor that made an addition to the house. He left in the middle of it and it sits incomplete with electrical wires, pluming, a roof, and a concrete floor. If this room can be finished, Rudy will have a handicap accessible bathroom to increase his independence and give him a place he can maneuver in and out of on his own. Please help us finish this room for Rudy. All of the donations go directly to him-100% to the renovation project. Whatever funds are left over goes to him for expenses that the family incur when traveling to Miami Hospital. When donating, please put his name on the check to ensure it goes directly to him. It seems we are so busy with helping others, that our blog is left to last. I have so much to share with what we are doing for our Lord and Savior. I feel sometimes overwhelmed with such joy to be doing so much for Him. During the holidays, we were able to bless so many families with gifts and financial resources from all the donations. They were so welcomed and went to families that were in need. We are currently working on a new program called Teens with Tots or TNT for short. We are working with teen mothers starting at pregnancy and continuing on throughout the early years. We are helping them build a relationship with Christ, educating themselves for their future, helping with finding resources for their child, and mentoring them in multiple areas. We have received such a gift from the community with help from different churches, organziations, doctors, and people. We feel so grateful-it is difficult for Jason and I to take from people and ask for help. The amazing thing is that many are coming to us saying LET US HELP!! It is hard to refuse that.

I am working on our yearly report and newsletter. If you have a story or praise, let us know and we will include it in there. We will keep you updated to our goals and objectives hopefully better than in the past!

Away for so long

I am sorry that we are not updating as regularly as we would like to. Things have kept us quite busy and I have neglected writing to keep you informed to our activities. We have not anticipated the rapid growth of all that God has asked of us. Many of you may have seen our news paper article and we are pleased with the response of it. When we were contacted by the newspaper, our initial response was to decline the story but realized that we could help so many if we did it. Jason and I are quite uncomfortable with being in the lime light and are easily embarrassed by praise or recognition. We feel that we are merely an instrument for God and that we deserve no praise. It is from our Lord that we are able to serve the community and to Him is the Glory. We appreciate everything that has happened and are grateful for the support. I was amazed at the amount of phone calls that I received. I believe I was on the phone from 7:23 until 6:31. The only break I had from it was during our first meeting with our pregnant teens. I believe it is important to give recognition to people and want to thank Citrus Animal clinic for the generous gift to us. I also thank First Presybertian Church for the gift cards they furnished. We had multiple people call for our address and some wanting to donate tools, toys, clothing, and various items. I am overwhelmed by the generosity of our community and feel blessed to have the support from them. We also received crib bedding and furniture from Pastor Katsanis & his wife from Grace Bible Church. Dr. Summer Khan & her husband Dr. David Guerra also have donated multiple baby items as well as their time for our "girls". In fact, there was one weekend where Dr. Khan was helping a mother by cooking dinners and handing them out. During this event, she dropped everything she was doing to help out one of the teens we mentor. I have never seen a Dr. so devoted to her patients and feel blessed to have both her and her husband's support. I also thank Liz for her involvement. Thank you everyone.

Since it is late, I will let you know of our exciting events and finish tomorrow with a list of families and needs that we have for Christmas. Today with the phone and newspaper article, we were kept quite busy. My husband had a few paying opportunities that he went to give estimates and around 2 in the afternoon had to go fix a broken main water line for a family. I guess because of the cold, the pipe broke and the family was without water. He put one of the young men to work digging a trench from the main water line to the house while he repaired and replaced the pipe. He continued to run around bringing people to the store or other errands and ended up coming home in time for us to feed the children and for me to run off to take care of my mother.

I started our day taking one of our teens to court. Luckily we were able to get in and out and I headed home to begin preparations for our first meeting of teens with tots. We had four teens in our group, a mother that had children in her teens, and another for support. It was a time of prayer, introductions, and support. I am hoping to open the doors to even more teens by talking with the schools and offering our number as a resource. I think the ability to have someone in the similar situation can help these young ladies form friendships of support. Most importantly, I hope to share the importance of having God as the main support to help ease the burdens they will surely endure.

More volunteers

Wow, we have been busy and so grateful to those that are helping us. We have a few volunteers that have been donating their time to do some work. Today, I took two younger teens to help with BL ministries in sorting clothing, getting things ready for the Bring your on bag clothing drive on Friday. If you are interested in getting some clothing, you can contact me for the phone number. Tomorrow Jason goes out to repair someone's toilet, while I take Ms. Fischer to the doctors. After that we will be sending out a volunteer to continue helping BL ministries from 12 until.... I will pick up two more volunteers and head over there in the afternoon. What a busy day tomorrow will be, but at least it is for our Lord and Savior. Today, while volunteering, I was able to work with two teens. What an encouragement to see the Lord working in their lives.
As I wrapped things up for the night, I was delighted to see a donation from an old friend Dr. Patten. I am amazed at how God works in people's lives and touches their hearts. It was so unexpected and will help the pregnant teens as well as to Joni. For Jason and I, it brings a renewed sense of encouragement, knowing that others are willing to help in whatever way they can. For Joni, ttomorrow she will be secured in the living facility because of our donors-Thank you so much.

Our God is Amazing

What a wonderful Lord we serve. Today, we were able to secure enough funds for Joni to move into the assisted living facility. Thank you to all those that donated to her. When we put our faith in God, He always provides. It may not be in our time or in our way, but He does take care of our needs. This week, we will be doing a great deal of volunteering for organizing clothing and items for the safe house as well as for a Bring your Own Bag clothing drive. For anyone interested, BL Ministries will be hosting this event. Bring as many walmart bags or kitchen size garbage bags and you pay per bag. For the walmart size bags it is $2.00 and for a kitchen size bag it is $7.00. This is to help for gas when picking up and dropping off. We have 5 volunteers that are helping sort this out and are so grateful for them. If there is anyone out there with a special need and cannot afford it, please email me at kimberlysmith@workinfaith.org and we will try to get it for you. We also will be doing some volunteering on Saturday for a beautification project with Avon Park Housing Authority. If anyone is wanting to come out and join us, again contact me.

Busy Busy Busy

We are increasing in clients and are able to help so many. This week, Jason has been repairing a shower while I have been running Mrs. Fischer to different appointments. We are thankful to Brenda for all the donations for two young teen soon to be mothers. If anyone has any baby supplies that they would like to donate, please let us know. These two ladies are working through volunteering to gain an understanding of responsibility and caring for others. It is amazing to see God's work in progress and I am thankful for the opportunity to serve him. My human heart wants to be able to do more and serve more people, but I am reminded that it is in His plans and I need to completely surrender myself to Him and trust Him to lead the way.

road trip

Last week we were able to provide help to one of our previous clients by traveling across the country to bring her some furniture and other misc. items. I left on Friday and picked up Jenn Gleason (a fellow board member) and we drove 20 hours to Omaha Nebraska.It took us two days and many miles of cornfields, but we arrived at 2 on Sunday. After dropping Jenn off, I continued to South Dakota at 10 until 2 in the morning. After that, I drove the remaining 2 1/2 hours to our clients new home and made my flight out at 4.

While it was an exhausting trip, the opportunity to witness to our clients and to share the word with each other was such a benefit. I also had so much time to reflect on what we are doing and how many people we are able to reach. I am only praying that our grants will come through so we can reach many more.

Before we left, we were able to help a single mother with transportation so she could get a job. A new client had work for us to complete and we were able to purchase her car for 225.00. On the same day, we received an email about this young lady that had no transportation.

After praying about it, we decided to give the car to the young lady. Amazingly, one of the woman there decided to give us back the money and i must say that I was touched. There are not many with such a heart. The best part is that the young lady secured not only one job, but two and has been working quite a bit. I am so grateful to our God that He allowed us this opportunity to serve Him.

Please keep us in your prayers with our grants and with many difficulties. We have teen mothers in need of everything, clients with major roof repairs, kitchen remodeling, ramp assistance, and so many other projects. Lift these families up that God will provide the funding for them so we can complete the tasks. Thank you for the support.

A thank you to all of you that have donated items to our clients. We were able to give a washer and dryer to one family of 6 and ac's to two different families. We have been quite busy working with some clients who wish to remain private, cleaning, sorting, lawn maintenance. We are gaining quite a few clients now and are just praying that the grants will be reviewed and God's hand will be on them. There is so much need in Highlands and we want to do so much more for the families. Everyday new stories fall on our ears and each one seems worse than the last. It is a constant reminder to feel so blessed for all that I have and to be thankful that the Lord gave us this mission. It is often hard on the heart and can be overwhelming to see such trials that these people are faced with. I find myself relying more on the Lord to give me strength so that I can shoulder our clients' burden and ease their pain. To see homes with leaks in every room, the smell of mold, mildew, or just that musty order in the bedrooms, can tug at the heart strings. Each day that we help,we do not know how our God will use us. Sometimes, it is to listen, sometimes to repair. Often we run errands for a client or help them obtain appliances. We have learned that our plan to repair homes is not the Lord's plan. He is using us in whatever way these families need since only He knows their true needs. Thank you to all those that have helped. Please let me know if you are able to help with any materials or financial supports. Mostly, keep us uplifted in your prayers. We hit stumbling block after stumbling block as we grow with clients. Just yesterday, our work truck that pulls the trailer was rear ended causing no mechanical issues. However, the bumper is hanging off and we cannot pull the trailer. Apocryphal Books

1 John is believed to be written by John, one of the apostles and falls in the general epistles category. It was written to a group of people that were Christians to encourage them and demonstrate how faith should affect them. It also tells Christians to guard against falsehoods.

Chapter one seems to be emphasizing Christ Jesus and the way to eternal life. It is a reminder that although we have sinned (and we all have) that we are forgiven because our Lord Jesus died on the cross for us. What amazes me is to picture John writing this book in his elder years with such conviction and determination to proclaim the word because he saw it all. He was there when Jesus preached to the crowds and when Jesus healed the sick. He saw all the miracles, all the teachings, and mostly he saw his Lord up on the cross. John is God’s instrument to declare the truth and preach upon what he witnessed firsthand.

Chapter 2 is a reminder to love God and not the world. As I walk around and see all the gadgets and all the technology that surrounds us, I am reminded of how real our world seems. These trivial things seem so important at the time, new cell phones that you can navigate the internet faster, new cars that can basically drive by themselves, better TV’s with higher definition to watch the shows that are of this world, the new sports team that may win this year, and I ask myself, what does any of this have to do with Christ or God?

1 John 2:15-17 states “Do not love the world or anything in this world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For everything in the world-the craving of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does-comes not from the Father but from the world... The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever.

Which world are you living in, God’s or man’s. As a Christian, I strive to live each day in God’s world, as a man I often am enticed to live in my world- the human world. It is a constant struggle to remember that everything I do is a reflection of my Lord and I find myself falling short all the time. It is hard to remember to improve myself with only those things that God would want in my life. As I turn on the radio, I hear the music that I like- a seductive drum beat or amazing vocals- only to remind myself to ask the question “is this edifying to my soul-is this what a person of God should be listening to” 1 John is refreshing to study because it encourages me to live as God would want not as my sinful nature would desire.

Completing projects

Thank you for being patient with us as we are in the middle of construction on our website and on our grants. This is keeping me rather busy and I have been away from our blog. Jason has been working with many of our clients and we have some new ones. Pretty soon we will have a family needs page with current projects and the special items that are needed. Currently, we are in desperate need of some essential materials for a roof. One client has a roof that is leaking in multiple areas and needs to be completely replaced. We are also looking for a carpet for another project. If you have any materials that you would like to donate, please contact us. Thank you so much and God bless.

Jason and I have been busy with new clients. On Thursday, I went out to Ms. B's to do some more packing. It is so inspiring to work along side clients. Despite, her health, she pushed herself quite hard and accomplished so much. She donated some items to Works in Faith and we were able to find homes for most everything. Jason headed out into the afternoon to help Mr. M with some basic repairs. He caulked exterior windows and sealed around the vent in the roof. On Friday, he went to Mrs. Mary's to work on a screen door and sealing her concrete. Saturday, I went to visit with Ms. Fischer and spent some time with her friends. Jason spent the afternoon with Mrs. W getting groceries. This week Jason has a full schedule as do I. Monday I went to Mrs. B to help her pack. She had some company so it was a short visit. Today, Jason spent the day at Mrs. Mary's completing last week's task.

JASON: Today I went to Mrs. Mary's house. She has a problem with the garage wall leaking. The bottom of the drywall is damaged to a height of 18 inches and about 15 feet in length on the inside, and she says this has been going on for several years. I'm not sure exactly where the water is getting in. The roof is about 10 years old and looks fine, and the gutters are working well. She has three fixed windows on the wall, and the caulk was not in great shape, so I cleaned each window of loose material and put silicone around the glass and the casing. The outside of the wall is brick, and some of the mortar around the windows and at the wall/deck joint was missing or sloppily repaired, so I cleaned that up and put some mortar in the gaps. I also filled the cracks on the concrete patio with sealant, even though I doubt that was the source of the water infiltration, but it looks much better now anyway. When I go back on Friday I will spray sealer on the brick walls. I also repaired some of her irrigation in the yard. I also have two screen doors to re-screen Friday.

KIMBERLY: Yesterday, Jason went to get groceries for a client and had to get supplies for today. I went to visit Mrs. Fischer on Saturday with the children and will hopefully get out there on Wednesday or Thursday. Today, I went to Ms. B's and finalized the plans. I will be helping her pack this Thursday for a little while. A new verse I will leave you with Matthew 6:8 Our Father knows what you need before you ask him. What a sense of peace that verse gives me. He is well aware of our plights and although we do not know His plan, we know that His plan is perfect.

JASON: Today I went to the M's. I started off by repairing some more of their windows. I removed the old warped plastic glazing and put in new aluminum glazing on three windows. Then I adjusted the thermostat on their hot water heater. After that I tried to rework the weatherstripping on their back door. The door is not plumb in the opening so it was tricky to get it to shut with the weatherstripping in, so I'll have to come up with another solution.
Then we went over the other things that need to be done. The tie-downs under the trailer need to be tightened, so I need to find a 4' length of steel pipe to use with my big pipe wrench to do this. The porch roof also has a leak. The bathroom floor under the vanity is suspect, on the other side of the wall is where the old water heater leaked and saturated the subfloor in the surrounding rooms- about six weeks ago I replaced the bad subfloor in the bedroom by the water heater. The kitchen sink is ancient and leaks around the handles and faucet, and water pools on the countertop, so we'll get them a new faucet. The front sliding glass door is missing the handle and the lock is tricky, so I'll have to replace that. The front porch is rotten where it is exposed to the elements. They have an aluminum screen room on this porch, and outside of the walls about six inches of the plywood floor is exposed, it is not pressure treated plywood so it was bound to rot. I plan to cover the outside plywood with a layer of pressure-treated ply wrapped in aluminum. The screen door on this porch has a loose threshold since some of the floor beneath it is also rotten, so I'll be replacing some of the damaged stuff inside, too.

KIMBERLY: Today I spent some time with a new client Ms. B. We took her to the bank and discussed future plans for help. Because of her desire to move, we will be helping her pack and travel out of Florida. We are trying to find a home for her little cat (a beautiful Siamese male if anyone is interested).

Away for a bit

Last week, we had to travel out of state to visit with our family. This past Monday, Jason headed out to Ms. W to work on building a lean to for her lawn mower. He stopped to get some groceries for her and was there from 1:30 until 8:00. Tuesday he went back out there in the afternoon to finish the lean to and mow the front yard. On Wednesday, we visited with a new client in the morning, re networked her computers, and arranged for cleaning her home. Please keep this woman in your prayers as she is undergoing a difficult time. I will share more of her story once we receive permission. In the afternoon, Jason went out to Mrs.Maries to adjust sprinklers and evaluate future repairs. Today, Jason finished the lawn for Ms. W. He will head out the Mr. M's tomorrow to work on a bit of everything.

We are looking for a lawn mower if anyone has one to donate. We have quite a few people needing their lawn cut and it would be greatly appreciated if we could get one. We are also interested in recruiting individuals for volunteering. We have so many projects that we could use the help!!

Friday, Jason went back to Mrs. Fischers and brought her with him to look at a recliner. They were able to find one that fit her perfectly and she is now comfortable. God reminds us of the simple blessings each and everyday and I am thankful that we are able to help others no matter how small the gesture is.

Works in Faith received a new client this afternoon. We had to rush this client into our schedule due to their circumstances. Please keep this family in your prayers. The woman has multiple ailments including MS and diabetes. Her husband has been her caretaker for the past few years and she now finds herself becoming the caretaker of him due to a very quick spreading cancer. Jason went over to meet them and fill out the information so we can provide the help they need.

On Saturday, we received a phone call that Mrs. W. had been in the hospital due to a fall and was home alone. Jason headed up there in the evening to help change an ice pack and spend some time with her. Mrs. W. is an 86 year old woman with crippling arthritis in her arms and legs. She had a very difficult time getting around and with her leg injured, she has an even harder time. On Sunday, Jason headed back up to visit Mrs. W. and brought her some food.

When we started this non-profit, I had no idea the adventure that God would take us on. I see so much pain and suffering in our clients lives. It is a constant reminder that although suffering and tribulations do exist, God has given us the ability to endure. In Psalm 34:19 , it reads "Many are the afflictions of the righteous; but the Lord delivers him out of them all". It is through our trials that we are taught patience, faith, and hope.

Kimberly: Yesterday, I took the kids to visit one of our clients and help her with some things. We have been looking for a recliner for her since the current chair does not support her. She has shattered areas on her vertebrae and is in great pain. This woman is so strong and determined that my sympathy goes out to her. She does not like to burden anyone and will try to do everything on her own. Today Jason went to her house to remove misc. items from the house. He also dumped her newspapers, mail, and garbage. While he was there, he sprayed the outside of the house for bugs. He received a call about a recliner and brought it back to Ms. Fishers. Unfortunately it did not work for her and he will try again tomorrow. On his way home, he helped clear out a home of debris and left over items from moving. Hopefully we will find homes for all the items.

Today I finished some bathroom work for Mrs. May. I started the job late Thursday morning. She suffered a stroke recently and consequentially has some accessibility issues. The first thing I did Thursday was remove her old toilet so I could install the new, taller one that she had purchased. The old one had been leaking onto the tile floor for some time, and when I got the toilet off I saw that the old flange had cracked and separated. So I had to make a trip to buy a new flange so the new toilet could go in. I installed the new flange and set the toilet. I connected the supply line and caulked around the base. The last thing I did was glue a piece of PVC trim to front of the tub, covering several rust spots just above the floor, and then caulking that.

Friday I removed her old vanity cabinet that was falling apart. She had purchased a new one along with a new faucet. I installed the new cabinet, countertop, and faucet, and put in a new undersink drain.

We’ve also done some work for Mrs. May in the past. We replaced the old hot/cold valves in her shower (the old knobs had stripped off and she was turning her water on with pliers), and installed a new tub spout, and a shower head.

Today we did some work at the Martin’s home. When I arrived we visited and caught up on things, talking for nearly half an hour. We’ve done several things for them since February of this year. Over the last four months, we had a new water heater installed for them, some exterior steps have been repaired, we put a new stove in the kitchen, fixed a leaky bathroom faucet, removed and reset a leaky toilet while replacing the surrounding subfloor that was rotted and giving way to the weight above, replaced the flapper in the toilet, also replaced a section of a bedroom subfloor that was damaged by water from the old water heater which leaked. We also took them shopping one Saturday while their van was not running.

What we did today was replace the aluminum glazing on five exterior windows. We also put some new weather stripping on the back entry door.
There is more to do and I may be going back on Friday afternoon.
